The available real estate in Darien is condominiums, apartments and single family homes. There are many great neighborhoods that are quiet and in a suburban setting while being accessible to the downtown area and shopping, convenient public transportation and interstate Route 95.
The neighborhoods of Darien are family friendly while the town itself offers a variety of resources that include more than 200 acres of recreational facilities and park areas, a movie theater, baseball stadium and a well respected equestrian center. The waterfront area has several private yacht clubs for boating and beach enthusiasts.
Darien was originally part of Stamford and incorporated as the town of Darien in May 0f 1820. The first settlers purchased the area along the Long Island Sound from the Indians in 1640. As the colony grew, the settlers realized they would soon need more land and purchased additional land for the price of four coats and some tobacco. The settlers began building homes along the Sound and roads through the woods. After some refinement of the roadway system, Darien became a stop on the stagecoach run between Boston and New York. In the mid 1800’s, the first railroad came through Darien.
The Darien of today has grown into a picturesque coastal community that has transformed itself from a summer destination into an active and vibrant community of 22,000 year round residents. The less than traditional architecture gives the town a unique look. With its proximity to Manhattan, less than an hour away, Darien has become an ideal community for relocation. With a variety of properties for sale any real estate agent will be able to find a home fitting anyone’s criteria.
The public school system is highly rated by educational professionals and parents and in 2011, Darien High School was voted one of the best high schools in the state. The required Connecticut Academic Performance Tests (CAPT) and the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMT) show students are 97 to 99% proficient in core subjects. More than 90% of the high school graduates go onto competitive universities and colleges.
Darien has a lot to offer, as any realtor will tell you, and includes Bates-Schofield House at the Darien Historical society and Weed Beach Park. The park is home to the Junior Sailing program and includes tennis courts, a beach and bath house, kids play area and concession stand.
